Almas Tower, Dubai, UAE
The Almas Tower is the centrepiece of the Jumeirah Lakes development, 20km south-west of Dubai, and is host to the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre diamond exchange facility. The tower takes the shape of two gracefully intersecting ellipses that gently taper as they ascend, the taller 64-storey tower rising 360m to the tip of the mast. The lower tower faces north with the taller being south facing, overlapping along their east-west axis.
At the base of this elegant superstructure is a three-storey podium in the form of eight interlocking triangles, inspired by the glittering facets of a cut diamond. ‘Almas’ means diamond in Arabic.
The most prominent facet houses the actual diamond exchange where stones can be viewed and traded. The podium glass is of a specification such that the diamond inspection process will not be influenced by the light.
A glass floor of over 15m covers the tip of the exchange, allowing clients to walk on the glass with the lake beneath them.
