The size of the ITC Headquarters tower was generated by the client’s requirements for office space, but the form and orientation is a response to environmental concerns, in particular minimising heat gain and maximising power generation from the wind turbines housed in the elliptical ‘points’.
The present campus-style facility had a number of advantages, in particular the way that staff taking a quick break in the interposed green spaces had chance meetings that sparked good business ideas. For this reason it was reluctant to lose the campus benefits.
The response was to create a vertical campus. The central atrium, for example, provides a healthy meeting venue for staff and also provides a perfect stack-effect flue, exhausting warm, stale air and using the draught created to draw cool, fresh air into the office spaces.
