In our newly launched video series Exploring Architecture, we dive deep into the design of some of the massive projects in the region. We speak to the architects behind some of the striking structures we see in the region to know about the whole process of development – from 2D to physical spaces.

Episode 1 – Exploring the design details of Museum of the Future

In our first episode, we explore the dynamic design of the Museum of the Future with Shaun Killa, design partner at Killa Design.

With dynamic and striking architecture by Killa Design, the Museum of the Future has for some time been a landmark for the country. The mastermind behind the unconventional design, Killa spoke about the various ways in which Museum of the Future was a testament to the passion of various players from the design industry.

A collaborative effort

Since its inception, the museum has been in the news for its architecture and unique aesthetics. It was named one of the 14 most beautiful museums on the planet in a list compiled by National Geographic magazine in 2021. Its stunning architecture was praised for its combination of design and technology.

In the first detailed interview with Killa, he spoke about the unique technology used in the design. From tech that was used to make submarines and movies to those used in aviation, Killa outlined some of the firsts in the world that was accomplished with the design of the museum.

He also spoke about the various collaborators on the project, especially Buro Happold and their perseverance in implementing the design without massive changes.

“Because this building was so innovative and we are using technologies that were almost never used in the building industry before, right down from technologies from the aviation industry and certain systems, there was a huge amount of interaction between the architects and engineers, contractors, subcontractors during the building process,” says Killa. “This was unprecedented because in most buildings you supervise, there’s not that continuos design element, particularly on the facade”.

With its size and complex design, the Museum of the Future involved using massive amounts of data during the design phase. The civil engineering company, Eversendai, integrated Tekla Structure, Trimble’s flagship software solution, to make the workflow smoother and deliver the intricate interface requirements. Matthews Southwest worked as the project manager on the base building.

Coming up – Part 2: Sustainability, construction challenges and more

In our upcoming part 2 of the interview with Shaun Killa, we talk about the construction challenges, timelines and why sustainability was an important factor for the construction of the project – both personally and professionally. Make sure to stay tuned for the episode.
